Welcome reception
All participants and registered guests are invited to join the Welcome Reception on a special place in the Derlon Hotel of Maastricht, an informal gathering with drinks and culinary treats. Before construction of the new Derlon Hotel was commenced, Maastricht’s city archeologist undertook an extensive survey of the site. The Roman finds, from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th centuries, are so important that it was decided to conserve them and exhibit them to interested parties. The following can be seen in the cellar of Derlon Hotel; part of the 2nd and 3rd century square, a 3rd century well, part of a pre- Roman cobblestone road and sections of a wall and a gate dating from the 4th century. Roman finds are exhibited in glass cabinets, and panels provide extra information on the results of the archeological survey of the site.

Jezuietenberg
On Monday evening it is possible to visit the “Jezuietenberg”, which is located just outside the centre of Maastricht. This is one of the most beautiful limestone quarries in the world. We will concluded this visit with a delicious buffet at estate “Slavante”.
One of the worlds best provided preserved marlstone quarries, the 'Jezuietenberg (Jesuit Caves)', is located on the outskirts of the city of Maastricht, close to the Belgian border. Exploitation of this quarry, which forms part of the 'Fallenberg-complex', took place between 1704 and 1880, when marlstone was widely used as building material. Owing to the Jesuit Fathers there now is a subterranean museum in this vast network of galleries. Between 1860 and 1960 Jesuit scholars and theological students spent a great deal of their leisure time on Wednesday afternoons in this quarry where they recreated after their strenuous studies.
In the galleries there is a constant temperature of 10 degrees Celsius only. The humidity is as high as 98 %. Consequently it is recommended to wear warm clothes and comfortable shoes.
For more information about the Jezuietenberg please visit the website www.jezuietenberg.nl.
